April 6 - No School

April 10 – Evening with the Arts, 5-8 p.m. at DLHS

"Evening with the Arts" will showcase student talents from all grades

To celebrate the accomplishments of David Lipscomb’s student artists, vocalists, actors and musicians, the school’s Fine Arts Department is hosting "Evening with the Arts," April 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the high school cafeteria and Acuff Chapel at 3901 Granny White Pike.

In addition to the student art show, the evening will feature performances by the high school band, the elementary and middle school choruses, and a musical number from the high school drama department’s production of "Brigadoon." Musical performances will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The evening’s events are free of charge and open to the public. According to Fine Arts Director Robert King, the arts are an integral part of the educational experience at David Lipscomb.

"At Lipscomb, we don’t view fine arts as an ‘extra,’ but rather an essential part of every child’s development,” King said. “God created us in His image, so it’s a part of our God-likeness to be engaging the aesthetics of the arts and discovering those gifts He has placed in each of us."

Damon Varble receives U.S. Senate Appointment to U.S. Naval Academy

Since about the fifth grade, David Lipscomb senior Damon Varble said he has dreamed of attending the U.S. Naval Academy. This summer, that dream will finally come true when he leaves for Induction Day in Annapolis, Maryland. Damon recently received his acceptance from the U.S. Naval Academy accompanied by a U.S. Senate appointment from U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander and a U.S. Congressional appointment from U.S. Congressman Jim Cooper. During their political terms, senators and representatives have only a limited number of appointments to the U.S. Naval Academy that they can award, Damon explained. After attending the Academy for four years, Damon will serve a minimum of five years in the U.S. Navy.

"My grandfather was a submarine commander in the Navy," Damon said. "When people ask me what I want to do, I say I want to fly, but I might also want to be on a submarine or work on a ship."

Congratulations to Damon for receiving such an important honor and acheiving a lifelong dream!

New writing assessment program (WrAP) launched
Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, all of the 9th and 10th graders participated in the WrAP (Writing Assessment Program). This national assessment is a part of the ERB (Educational Records Bureau) testing program that our elementary and middle school have recently adopted. The WrAP fills a unique niche for our high school. Our English Department will be evaluating these results as they are returned to us.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
set for April 5
April 5 has been set aside for parents and teachers to get together to discuss the academic performance of our students. Teachers will be available on this day after school until 8 p.m. for conferences. To maximize the time, please schedule a time with the teachers you wish to meet with. Parents and teachers are free to contact each other to schedule a time. Parents and teachers are encouraged to use this opportunity to learn how our students can be served and achieve as much as they can.

Chelsey Piper named to All-Academic Team

During the spring break Lincoln High School baseball tournament during spring in Tallahassee, Fla, DLHS Daniel Lyons pitched a perfect game against Marianna High School of Florida. For his efforts, Daniel received a $1,000 scholarship to the school of his choice. The scholarship was established by the tournament directors in honor of the chairman's father to be given each year to a worthy player. Congratulations also to the David Lipscomb Mustangs baseball team, who won three games in the tournament.

Hoops for Heart is Here
Hoops for Heart was held today, March 29 and continues tomorrow, March 30. The students of DLMS are participating in a 3 on 3 tournament that will benefit the American Heart Association. Instead of going door to door as we have done in previous years, the students will address donation letters, which the school mailed out. Each 3 on 3 team must address ten letters in order to participate in the tournament. Other activities will include “Gotcha,” “Hot Shot,” and arcade basketball. Last year DLMS was in the top ten in the state in donations. Stay tuned to find out the results from this year's event.

The water was worth it

After asking students and faculty to give up soft drinks for a day and drink bottled water, seventh graders were proud to collect $860 during the World Clean Water Day fundraiser. The funds were presented to Dr. Gilliam and the Lipcomb University Engineering Dept. for a trip the engineering students are taking to Guatamala to help construct a water tower for a village there.

Fifth grade to get in touch with nature next week
Next week, the fifth grade will be at Nature’s Classroom in Mentone, Ala. for three days. They will have opportunities to hike, take classes and participate in other activities in an outdoor setting. The camp has a full staff of teachers who provide school in the outdoors. Our students will choose from activities such as “Feed Your Face” (using herbs for facials, etc.), Hoot and Hurl (dissecting owl pellets) or Burma Bridge (students build and walk across a rope bridge). This is a special time for our students as they have the opportunity to try new things and build closer relationships with each other.

Memorable night of science activities was a hit

Several David Lipscomb students in grades K-6 along with their families came out March 12 to the middle and high school campus to experience a night of Scintillating Science. The entire science faculty from all three schools in addition to special guests from the Lipscomb University physics department were there to lead demonstrations with slimy polymers, "hair-raising" electricity, air cannons and rides on the always popular leaf-blower powered hovercraft. Fox 17 News came to film the exciting night for their 9:00 news segment. Thanks to everyone for supporting this fun, educational evening.

FYI – Important dates for middle school parents

  • St. Louis Trip meeting for seventh grade parents - Seventh grade parents need to put Thursday evening, April 5, on their calendars. Any parent who is a notary, and can assist us on this evening with the paperwork, please let Mrs. Irwin know. It is imperative that a parent be at our meeting that evening. We plan to meet in Acuff Chapel at 5:30 p.m. and will execute the meeting and paperwork as quickly as possible.

Readers are 'blossoming' at DLES Kindergarten

Just as each seed produces its own fruit in its own time and after it own kind, each child is just as unique. When it comes to reading, there is a lot of sprouting going on at DLES Kindergarten. Every child unfolds at his/her own rate of readiness, according to Kay Felts, who has been teaching reading to kindergartners for 23 years. Along with Mrs. Felts, all of the kindergarten teachers at DLES use a hands-on method to teach each child individually, giving them the tools to be successful. The “sprouting” is an annual event, Mrs. Felts said.

“Seeds are planted as we use a variety of activities to teach the alphabet and writing skills,” Mrs. Felts said. “We put down roots with phonics and sight words. Sprouts are cultivated with rhyming and leveled reading activities. Soon children blossom with independent reading and inventive spelling.”

What strong roots our children will have for learning as they grow!

Uniforms: Just a reminder
Remember that your child needs to be in official uniform at all times at school unless you have been told otherwise by his teacher. Please refer to the student handbook if you have questions about the uniform, including the shoes worn. Elementary students must wear sturdy play shoes and socks all day at school. When in P.E. these shoes must be athletic shoes. “Crocs” are not sturdy play shoes. We have loved how our students have looked this year. Thank you for your cooperation.

Conferences are important to your child's progress
Teachers will be offering possible conference times over the next few weeks so that information can be shared with you concerning your child’s progress at this point in the year. Hopefully you will be able to sign up for an appointment and spend some valuable time with your child’s teacher.

Look for new classroom placement forms
Historically, we have had parent forms available for you to give input on class placement for the next school year. One of our teachers has developed a new form, which should give us valuable information about your child’s best learning situation. We will be sending these forms in our acceptance letters, which will be mailed the first week of April. Please fill out this form and have your child turn it in to his teacher or to the office.

Congrats to our Honors Choir
Three of our fourth grade girls were chosen by audition to sing with the Middle Tennessee Vocal Association Middle School Honors Choir. Breanna Brown, Caroline Burch and Elizabeth Cluck performed Tuesday evening, March 13. We congratulate these girls for their excellent representation of DLES.

Dates to Remember
April 6 - No School (no extended day)
April 13 - 4th Grade Parent Breakfast (Middle School 7:00 a.m.)
April 13 - 1st Grade Program (Elementary Gym 8:15 a.m.)
April 13 - Half-Day (Dismissal at 11:00, Extended Day available)
All students staying extended that day must make reservations by April 10. There is no cost to students on contract; all other students will pay $13 for the half-day.

Advancement News

Annual Fund Campaign needs your participation
One of the goals at the beginning of the school year was to reach 100% participation by our DLCS parents in our Annual Fund Campaign. Currently, 25% of our families have made a gift to the Annual Fund. If you have not yet given, your gift in any amount is needed to help us provide some program enhancements and facilities improvements for our school. Your gift will help provide the following:

• $80,000 - New 60 passenger school bus
Our current bus has been in service for nearly 14 years. While this bus is still safe and serviceable, it needs to be replaced due to mileage and age.
• $25,000 - Softball Field improvements
The Lady Mustang softball team has a remarkable legacy of championship teams. Their playing field located behind the elementary school is due some field and support structure improvements.
• $75,000 - School Coordinator Funds
Each year we provide our three school principals with some additional funds to supplement their program operating budgets.
• $50,000 - Classroom Technology
As we continue to upgrade our technology, we need additional funds to complete the installation of school boards in the classrooms.
• $25,000 - Riedl Endowment for Teacher Excellence
Established in 1997, this endowment fund is used to allow teachers to enrich their expertise through additional education and travel experiences.
• $25,000 - Good Samaritan Fund
This fund is used for families experiencing temporary financial hardships by helping with their tuition payments.
• $20,000 - Facilities Enhancements
Each year we aim to improve the looks and function of our current facilities. This money will be used for enhancing or adding value to our Campus School buildings.

Our goal is $300,000 by May 31 and we have raised $222,000 so far this year. With only eight weeks left in the school year, we need your help to reach our goal. If you would like further information on ways to contribute, contact Debbie Lambert, Director of Advancement, at 966-6227. Thank you!

Magazine sales made a difference
The magazine sale was a big success – thanks to everyone who helped raise money for our school by renewing, purchasing and selling magazine subscriptions! Through your participation, you helped raise $20,000 to benefit the Annual Fund and help purchase a new 60-passenger bus.

Placing magazine orders online continues to grow in popularity as a fast and easy way of renewing subscriptions. Remember that you may renew or purchase magazines throughout the year and DLCS will receive 40% of your purchase price, and your child can receive sales credit for prizes when our sale time comes next year.

Grocery/Retail Programs Provide FREE MONEY for DLCS
Remember that you can help our school when you shop at Kroger, Publix, Harris Teeter and Target. So far this year, we have received over $11,000 because of your participation in these programs that cost no additional money but offer great rewards for DLCS. For more information, contact the Advancement office at 966-6321 or read detailed information here: Grocery Programs
