Message from the Director
Our first annual consignment sale, the Lipscomb Clothesline, will be held the week of May 14. As a number of you will be selling uniform items, the question has been raised about appropriate school clothing for the final two weeks of the school year. We ask that students having uniform items continue to wear them. Those students who have sold their items and not yet purchased new ones are requested to wear khaki pants and a Lipscomb shirt or Lipscomb T-shirt. If you have specific questions regarding school clothing during this two-week period, please contact your school principal. Thanks for your cooperation.
Mission possible: Students stuff 500 teddy bears in 30 minutes
Exactly how many high school students does it take to stuff 500 teddy bears in 30 minutes? Approximately one student per teddy bear, give or take a few, is all that was needed during last Thursday's service-oriented chapel program. After the assembly line was organized, the entire high school student body and several faculty and staff members crowded together in the high school auxiliary gym to work together for a good cause. Their mission was to stuff 500 teddy bears in the 30 minutes allotted for chapel. Now that the bears are stuffed and sewn, they are scheduled for delivery to the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, neighborhood fire stations and police precincts, and the Monroe Harding Children’s Home.
For several weeks leading up to the event, students, teachers and even administrators have been working on sewing the bears together, said high school English teacher, Carrie Ross, who coordinated the service project. Ross said the idea came from a similar effort during her college years at Lipscomb University when students made bears to deliver to sick and hurting children.
“That project left such a memorable impact on me that I thought it would be a great project here,” Ross said. “I hope it will impact our students and make them think about ways they can help others.”
K-12 talent on display at ‘Evening with the Arts’
Artists, musicians, and vocalists from all grades were represented at “Evening with the Arts” Tuesday evening. According to middle school art teacher, Kathy Musick, this "Evening with the Arts" appeared to have the highest attendance in school history. Throughout the high school and middle school hallways, parents were able to enjoy student photography, artwork and sculpture on display. Guests also had the opportunity to hear the high school jazz band and elementary and middle school choruses and enjoy a scene from the upcoming high school musical “Brigadoon.”
"Our students, in so many cases, are secretly and humbly talented in music, drama, and art," said Erin Rickelton, high school art teacher. "This night allowed parents, friends, teachers, and students to admire the creative gifts of so many here at Lipscomb."
While enjoying the talents of our students, guests were also able to enjoy delicious hors d'oeuvres provided by Campus School parents - Kim Burch, Shawn Franks, Jeana Hein, Jane Moorer, Lainey Potts, Pam Hudson, Suzy Hillin, Bonnie Parham and Clara Burch.

High school to present the 1940s musical ‘Brigadoon’
Tickets are now available for the high school musical, the 1940s classic Lerner and Lowe musical “Brigadoon.” Show performances are scheduled for April 20 at 7 p.m. and April 21 at 1:30 and 7 p.m. in Acuff Chapel. While musicals at David Lipscomb are always a cherished tradition, this year’s performance is especially exciting for the students and faculty involved, said Drama Department Director, Angela Morton.
“We always have a large number of students who participate in the show, but this year we have a huge amount of student involvement for many of the creative aspects of the show,” Morton said. “We have 45 cast members - so there is a lot of traffic on the big musical numbers - but we also have several students behind the scenes with choreography and set design and construction. This show inspires grand set pieces that create a completely different world on stage.”
The world of “Brigadoon” is set in the misty Scottish highlands, where two lost American hunters try to find their way in a place not found on their map and among people who seem transported from another time. As the story unfolds, romance blossoms and a secret comes to light. Through emotional twists and turns and classic musical numbers such as “Heather on the Hill,” “Waitin’ for My Dearie,” and “Come to Me, Bend to Me,” this romantic comedy will leave the audience wanting more, Morton said.
Tickets for the show are $5. For ticket information contact Director Angela Morton at angela.morton@lipscomb.edu or 966-6367, Janet McMeen at the high school office at 966-1784 or Cheryl Pittard in the Campus School Director’s office at 966-1828.

Fifth graders learn new skills, history lessons in the great outdoors
Last week our fifth graders left the city life of Nashville for the serene surroundings at Nature’s Classroom in Mentone, Ala. There they took classes, went hiking, and took part in a simulation of the Underground Railroad. This exciting activity is done in the evening and students travel from station to station giving a story as to why they would be traveling at night. They are questioned by the “bounty hunters” and must give acceptable answers in order to travel on.
Classes included candle making, paper making, and outdoor survival skills. The children were great representatives of our school and received many compliments from the staff at Nature’s Classroom. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved.

The guest speaker will be Karen Douse, the librarian of Harpeth Hall school, speaking on Internet Safety. We urge you to come and hear about this very important topic. We will also have door prizes and the homeroom most represented by its parents will be rewarded with a pizza party. We look forward to being with you.
FYI - Saturday, April 21, 9-11 a.m., a test will be given to all sixth graders who are interested in taking pre-algebra as a 7th grader.
Students help fight heart disease at Hoops for Heart
Over 60 teams comprised of middle school boys and girls competed in Hoops for Heart held March 29 and 30. The entire student body enjoyed a game between the faculty and the seventh and eighth grade winners. The faculty team won, highlighted by Jane Hollingsworth’s two 3-pointers. Through this event, more than $7,000 has been raised for the American Heart Association, and more money is still coming in.
Glenview ‘buddies’ find friendship at egg hunt
The sixth grade enjoyed Easter this year by giving their time and attention to their "adopted” kindergartners at Glenview Elementary School. Each year, our sixth graders are paired up with one (or two) "buddies" from Glenview to serve as mentors. At the egg hunt, the sixth graders made eggs for their buddies and hid them outside. The kindergartners enjoyed finding the eggs with their names on them. They also enjoyed a hot dog lunch in the cafeteria.
According to sixth grade teacher Albert Thweatt, both the sixth graders and Glenview students look forward to their regular meetings throughout the year.
“It was a little cold outside, but everyone seemed to have a great time, “ Thweatt said. “The hugs that were shared by the students and their ‘buddies’ as Glenview was leaving spoke volumes.”
Consider being a middle school room mom
If your child will be in the fifth through eighth grade next year and you’re interested in becoming a room mother, please send an email to Laura Sears at laurasears@bellsouth.net. You will not be contacted until late summer, but now is the time when the PTO begins to compile a list of volunteers who can serve our students and teachers in this important way.
Elementary School News
First grade to sing for parents and for a good cause
April 13, our first graders will be giving a musical performance for their parents at 8:15 a.m. in the elementary gym. This performance is a repeat of the songs that were part of a DVD the first grade class donated to Vanderbilt’s Children’s Hospital. The DVD is just one part of a yearlong service project that first graders have been working on all year long. Students have made pictures for the hopsital's cardiac wing and regularly send pictures, paintings and drawings to the hospital for all major holidays. These pieces of art have been displayed throughout the hospital and given to family members.

Annual Fund Campaign needs your participation
One of the goals at the beginning of the school year was to reach 100% participation by our DLCS parents in our Annual Fund Campaign. Currently, 25% of our families have made a gift to the Annual Fund. If you have not yet given, your gift in any amount is needed to help us provide some program enhancements and facilities improvements for our school. Your gift will help provide the following:

This fund is used for families experiencing temporary financial hardships by helping with their tuition payments.
• $20,000 - Facilities Enhancements
Each year we aim to improve the looks and function of our current facilities. This money will be used for enhancing or adding value to our Campus School buildings.
Our goal is $300,000 by May 31 and we have raised $222,000 so far this year. With only eight weeks left in the school year, we need your help to reach our goal. If you would like further information on ways to contribute, contact Debbie Lambert, Director of Advancement, at 966-6227. Thank you!
