The David Lipscomb 'experience' is found onstage

At David Lipscomb Campus School, many of our students have been a part of a PreK-12 educational experience, literally being a part of the DLCS family from childhood to young adulthood. Not every child that we serve is in this category, but the idea is the same. No matter when our students come to us, they enter an environment where they can develop into the servant leaders of tomorrow.

They come to us full of promise. When they leave, they are not only prepared for college and career pursuits, but for lives of integrity in a world of constant change and challenges. Faculty and staff members are a witness to this exciting evolution of our students during their experience at DLCS. The following is an excerpt from a letter from Elementary Principal Sharon Farmer.

“Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend our high school production of the musical 'Brigadoon.' There were approximately 40 students involved in the production, most of whom received their early education from our elementary school. As I sat there watching those young men and women who had dedicated untold hours to honing their skills in acting, music, lighting, staging and set design, I experienced such a sense of pride in their work. I felt I was looking at my children…succeeding.

That’s what the Lipscomb PK-12 Experience is about. That’s what we as teachers and administrators envision. Thank you for sharing your family with us, for entrusting your child to our care.”

Health screenings available for middle/high school students

Baptist Sports Medicine (BSM) and the DLHS athletic trainer Ken Tyler (pictured here) will be conducting discounted health screenings for our students May 3 starting at 6 p.m. in the wrestling and auxiliary gyms. The screenings are $10 and are open to all middle and high school students. Parent volunteers are needed.

BSM also invites our student athletes to participate in a research study along with the regular screening. The goal of the study is to identify which tool (functional testing) is a more accurate predictor of athletic injuries. This will help BSM provide screenings in the future that are more efficient and research based. There is no added cost for this study. Student athletes do not have to participate in this study.

Ken Tyler can be reached at 966-6073, 416-3874 and/or ken.tyler@lipscomb.edu. Ken Tyler is an ATC Certified Athletic Trainer for DLHS and BSM.

Nashville Predators honor David Lipscomb eighth-grader

During a ceremony held prior to the Nashville Predators’ March 27 home game against the Edmonton Oilers, the Predators organization announced that David Lipscomb eighth grader Austin Akbari had been named Youth Hockey Player of the Month for March. Austin was presented with a plaque recognizing his efforts on behalf of the Predators during the ceremony. Austin was nominated and selected as part of a Predators youth community initiative that will regularly recognize a player in the Nashville area who demonstrates character skills that make youth hockey a better experience for all involved. Austin was nominated by family friend John McLallen.

“Austin is a young man dedicated to his team by encouraging his and the opposing team,” said McLallen.

Austin plays for the Southern Ice Bantam Storm travel team. The team is part of the Southern Youth Hockey League that plays at Southern Ice Arena in Franklin. Although Austin is only 13 years old, he already has nine years of hockey experience under his belt. Practicing as often as and wherever he can, Austin consistently brings a positive attitude and smile to the rink regardless of wins or losses.

Contributing more than just positive motivation for his team, Austin's name appears frequently on the goal portion of the score sheet. Although scoring is an achievement in itself, Austin treasures his assists and believes this is his proudest achievement, he said. With his positive attitude and playmaking ability, he is no stranger to leading his team to success.

Fifth grade to host play May 3
Everyone is invited to come take "A Walk Through Time" – a play that our fifth graders will present May 3, 6:30 p.m. in Acuff Chapel. The play examines the events of the 1900's as seen through the eyes of one family. Each fifth grade student has a role and our chorus will perform.

First grade students give back
Mrs. Harvey’s first grade class visited the Richland Health Center April 18 where they sang for the residents and worked with them on a craft. We received glowing reports from their visit regarding the behavior of the students and the appreciation of the residents and staff of Richland.

Pre-first ‘crosses the border’ for lunch

Last week, our own cafeteria employee Mayra Figueroa provided a Mexican picnic for the Pre-First Spanish class. She brought homemade tamales, corn tortillas, cinnamon chips, salsa and caramel. The children enjoyed hearing about how Mexican food is prepared and were able to sample the tasty food. Mayra also demontrated how the food is prepared with authentic Mexican kitchen utensils.

Elementary to learn without paper on Arbor Day
Tomorrow the elementary school will celebrate Arbor Day. The entire day will be a paperless day of learning. Some grade levels are planning outdoor science activities while others have organized lesson plans which make use of various forms of hands-on learning projects.
During the day a tree will be planted at the rear of the building which, will kick off the installation of an outdoor classroom area.

“We will be talking about conserving our resources that God has so richly blessed us with,” said second grade teacher Regina Lankford. “We will also discuss how much paper is used each day by schools all over America and how we can conserve better in the future.”
