Graduation ceremony marks accomplishments of Class of 2007
Saturday morning less than a week ago, 132 graduates of David Lipscomb High School walked across the stage in Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena to accept their hard-earned diplomas. In addition to Campus School faculty and staff and University staff representatives, parents, grandparents, siblings, extended family members and friends filled the arena to show their support and love for the efforts of our seniors.
Commencement speaker, Dr. Mike Roller, Director of Admissions and Athletic Director, watched his own daughter Julia graduate along with her peers. In his commencement speech, he shared the dreams that he wished for every graduate, such as a happy family and career success. But above all, he said that he only wished for them to “Find God” in every area of their lives.
We are proud of our graduates year after year as they go out into the world with a mission to bring God into the homes, workplaces and churches of tomorrow. Congratulations to the DLHS Class of 2007!

High School News
Kirstyn Sweeney is Pentathlon State Champion
At the State AA Track Meet held May 21 at MTSU, DLHS sophomore Kirstyn Sweeney became the first David Lipscomb state champion in the Pentathlon in nearly two decades. Sweeney’s title is the first since Beth (Tallent) Sheridan won the event in the 1980s.
Sweeney’s first place performance in the 800 m run and the 100 m hurdles vaulted her ahead of the field by 72 points. The Pentathlon, viewed as one of the most grueling events, combines three field events with two running events into a one day with little time to recover between events. The Pentathlon includes the 800 m run, 100 m hurdles, high jump, long jump and shotput.
Congratulations to Kirstyn and the rest of our track athletes for outstanding success at the State AA Track Meet and throughout the season. The Lady Mustangs placed second in the section track meet last week to qualify for the state meet. Several girls had top finishes and qualified for the state meet including Kara Sephel, Erin Sephel, Caitlin Anderson, Miranda Klein, Courtney McAlister, Heather Price and Brooke McFarland.
The boys' track team also placed second in the section track meet, narrowly missing a first place finish by three points. The boys also had some outstanding performances, sending several to state including Zach Rogers, who took first place in the long jump, breaking the school record; Ryan Johnson, Ryan Bell, Damon Varble, Alexander McMeen, Jamin Rucker, Russ Moneypenny, Trey Robbins, Kevin Murphy and Taylor Ezell.
State results will be posted as available on the TSSAA website - www.tssaa.org.

Elementary School News
Kindergartners make a new home for butterflies
The kindergartners have recently added a new butterfly habitat area beside the new security fence. They have planted more milkweed to host caterpillars and nectar plants for butterfly nourishment. With this addition the younger children can easily observe butterfly activity from the classroom and access the habitat quickly for close-up examination.
The elementary school campus has been designated Monarch Waystation #1056 by Monarch Watch thanks to the efforts of Ms. Becky Collins, who monitors the station with the help of the kindergartners. A Monarch Waystation is an area that provides milkweeds, nectar sources and shelter needed to sustain Monarch butterflies as they migrate through North America. Because there are at least three types of milkweed growing on campus, along with numerous blooming flowers and a source of water, Monarchs can find everything needed to live, grow and reproduce.
Sign up to be a room mom
Janice Goodwin and Angela Christian will be chairing our parent organization for the 2007-2008 school year and are already making plans. If you are interested in becoming a room mother, please send an e-mail to Janice Goodwin at georgegoodwin11@comcast.net. You will not be contacted until late summer, but lists of volunteers are being compiled to form committees that can serve teachers and students in this important way.
The Bible comes to life in chapel
Last week, the first grade took a leadership role in chapel by dressing as Bible characters and creating a “Bible Wax Museum.” After chapel was over, the students shared interesting facts about the characters with students in the other grade levels.
Third grade teachers receive award, grant for Space Day
The Air Force Association recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of aerospace education by providing grants to educators. Our third grade teaching team, Phyllis Sanders, Chuck Chisam and Kim Smith, applied for the Aerospace Education Excellence Award by completing activities developed by the Civil Air Patrol and United States Air Force. They recently received an $850 grant, which will be used toward their next Third Grade Space Day.
Nothin’ But Fun Day date is set
The date for next year’s Nothin’ But Fun Day will be September 21. Since this is earlier than usual, it will be especially important that our volunteers are lined up before school starts. Thanks to Ronda Sanderson who has agreed to head next year’s event.
Fun and learning activities are all around

- Chairperson of the Campus School Board Committee Neika Stephens was the guest "mystery reader" in Jaimie Potts' first grade class last week. The students enjoyed taking home a piece of Egyptian money and dressing up with Mrs. Stephens, who played the role of Pharoah's daughter to help illustrate this Bible story.
- Second graders led chapel on May 17 by acting out “miracles” of Jesus for the student body.
- Book Day for third grade was held Tuesday with students and teachers dressed as their favorite book characters. Surprise guests were invited to read to the students.
- Physical Skills Day for pre-first through fourth grade students was held May 11. Mr. Davis and Mr. Lansdell, with lots of help from parent volunteers, planned a fun day of physical activities that highlighted some of the skills they have worked on all year in P.E. class.
- Fourth grade projects were on display last week in our library. They were so creative and well-executed! Thanks to our teachers for planning curriculum-based activities that give children opportunities to grow and lead.
